It’s genuinely baffling to me that the IDF can have service members in uniform posting on social media about the atrocities they commit.

That’s not the sort of behavior you see in people struggling valiantly to defend their nation’s right to exist- that’s what psychopaths do when they’re secure in the knowledge that there will never be any consequences for joyfully documenting subjugation and their involvement in it.

u/theREALbombedrumbum 28d ago

What I don't get is why the propaganda arm is shutting this stuff down. They wouldn't have to fight so goddamn hard on the internet and in the news to defend themselves for PR purposes otherwise

571

u/QuixotesGhost96 28d ago

Because they're trying to manipulate the US election. The more the left is pissed off about Gaza, the more likely they are to hand the election to Trump who will give them the thumbs up to glass Gaza.

Most of them don't. They think they're playing the long game on a business as usual environment. If they can scare the Dems badly enough, maybe they'll finally get the attention / respect they want. They think Trump will be bad, but then next election, the Dems will HAVE to run a progressive dream.

It's not entirely their fault. Most are young, and the conservatives have been in a multi decade spiral to fascism so they've never seen the system operating "normally." They don't believe the danger of Trump is real.

104

u/Dovahpriest 28d ago

Issue with that train of thought on their end is that same idea got tried in 2016, which is how Trump was elected the first time and ended with the Jan. 6 insurrection.

But sure kiddos, let’s try it again cuz it will totally go better this time.

52

u/curtial 28d ago

There is a certain portion of leftists who have a similar delusion to MAGA. They are absolutely convinced that they're not only right but that everyone secretly agrees with them. So, if everyone would let them just be a LITTLE authoritarian, they would fix everything and then totally give up the power.

17

u/WhereThoseBoots 28d ago

You got some examples to point to? Cuz this sounds… nuts.

I've heard the opinion that when the world sees how awful Trump is for Gaza, then they'll step in and put a stop to Israel.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/M_H_M_F 28d ago

They don't expect the situation to be the same. They expect trump to tacitly agree with what's going on and encourage Israel to bomb the land flat with no survivors.

Kushner has interest in land development in what would be (formerly) Gaza. They want to commit a genocide, so they can build luxury condos.

Here’s the thing about Israel and Israelis. They don’t care, like at all.

41

u/philium1 28d ago edited 28d ago

There are Israeli citizens protesting this war on a daily basis. You do the world no favors by painting them all with the same brushstroke.

Israel is a large nation. Just like many, many Americans detested Trump, many, many Israelis detest Netanyahu and his evil war.

Many of them are genocidal pieces of shit who support this awful violence, but if we assume all of them are, it can lead to very dangerous thinking.

22

u/Nongqawuse 28d ago

Two thirds of Israeli Jews support the war and support withholding humanitarian aid. My comment was removed because I had linked the poll. The site is the Israeli democracy institute.

Israelis stopping aid convoys is not an outlying sentiment but the norm.

14

u/philium1 28d ago

I know and it’s deplorable that so many of them feel that way (although not unlike the United States’ feelings toward Iraq a year and a half after 9/11). But a third of a country is still significant. My central point is that making sweeping claims about the political sentiments of all Israelis is unhelpful.

6

u/useless_instinct 28d ago

Yeah, seems the biggest issue we have is trying to categorize a group of people as a monolith and deciding the sins of one are the sins of all. But maybe that nuance doesn't play well in the media.

8

u/MikeRowePeenis 28d ago

Israel is a large nation

It’s the size of New Jersey, bro. Just saying.

Catch 22. Internal Israeli audiences must love this shit. They need to keep people rabid for the extermination or risk people growing a conscience.

28

u/rogerwil 28d ago

I don't think they care right now, the attacks on october 7th were traumatic as fuck and any reaction is justified to the israeli public apparently, and it's still too fresh for enough people to realise that maybe things have gone too far in some respects.

In certain subreddits even very mundane comments expressing sympathy for the suffering of innocent palestinians (NOT hamas!) get downvoted into shit instantly.

Israeli people who oppose unnecessary actions by the israeli army don't seem to have much of a voice right now.

11

u/DeCounter 28d ago

My guess is that they are trying because stuff like this does impact them negatively abroad. But it's just so much that they can't clamp it all down.

Before you would have pretty IDF soldiers doing impressive looking training and doing challenges on your feed and now the soldiers take that same energy and burn library's, pretend to knock on doors to enter a building, when only the doorframe is left standing or supply artillery while wearing a Trex full body costume.

No way the IDF wants that to be seen.

20

u/Felstorm1231 28d ago

That’s what I have such a hard time understanding: how does any officer in a modern military see a bunch of nineteen year old conscripts posting bloodthirst traps all over Tik Tok and Instagram and not immediately think about the political fallout?

Unless there really is no desire to hide anymore and they’re comfortable with these things being done openly.

→ More replies (4)

31

u/PencilLeader 28d ago

Conscript armies always have terrible discipline. While professional militaries may not be all that much better in the war crime department, see what basically every country's special forces did in Afghanistan, they tend to be smart enough and have enough discipline to not self publish their war crimes.

150

u/stryst 28d ago

Yes, but now that soldier HAS to stay loyal. Now anywhere outside of pro-IDF spaces, he's an outcast. For the state, that's desirable.

57

u/Felstorm1231 28d ago

At that point, it seems like the state might not even be desirable anymore if they’re holding their own hostage through shame and coercive participation.

25

u/polobum17 28d ago

True but shame is powerful. Plus there's plenty of praise and love from zionist supportors.

10

u/CregSantiago 28d ago

Just think for a second in what space that they frequent would this person be considered an outcast. Isreal dosnt care. He's considered a hero just like the genocidal fighters in the torrah/Bible. he's only am outcast in the most liberal salons which he doesn't frequent.

→ More replies (2)

13

u/cococolson 28d ago

It shores up their support internally which is all they care about. If they try to shut it down then they are called out for "supporting the terrorists" in their minds it's like if the US soldiers destroyed effigies/religious artifacts important to the Taliban. Don't forget that when US soldier Hugh Thompson tried to stop killing of civilians they got flamed in public and nearly court martialed. That's the reaction of the public at war.

Its disgusting.

113

u/TSM_forlife 28d ago

It’s genuinely baffling to me that the IDF can have service members in uniform posting on social media about the atrocities they commit.

You're presupposing enforcement for international laws.

Since 2016 we've been lawless on a global scale, but no one is saying it out loud yet.

Can't think of a single event in history where the people burning books ended up being the good guys.

194

u/AjaxTheFurryFuzzball 28d ago

This reminds me of the Norm MacDonald Quote “It says here in this history book that luckily the good guys have won every time. What are the odds?”

23

u/Annual-Jump3158 28d ago

Because flawed ideologies aren't inherently threatening in the face of more appealing opposing ideologies. And typically, spreading hatred and shutting out all discourse has never remained consistently popular. It only manages to do so by suppressing opposing ideologies.

121

u/NotRadTrad05 28d ago

Its not stupid if there is no risk of punishment. Israel has won the propaganda war with almost all criticism being automatically painted as antisemitism.

6

u/Erikblod 27d ago

It is an example of feeling untouchable. They must honestly think they can get away with it without consequences because no way Israel will prosecute them for it. Not like things look like now. It will be ICC if any

Help me out here: how is burning libraries an act of self-defense?

225

u/ExpressAd2182 28d ago

You can clearly see the hamas's in the shelves. Actually, that book the soldier is holding? A hamas popped out of it when he first opened it.

29

u/celesfar 28d ago

He's threatened by an election, which can be delayed as long as there's a war on

46

u/Pistonenvy2 28d ago

ive been asking this question for months.

how is blowing up a hospital or a school or sniping children or stopping aid self defense? what the fuck does anything theyre doing have to do with self defense? where is the defense? it looks more like "total war" tactics being exacted against stateless civilians.

AKA genocide.

26

u/AethericWeave 28d ago

I have seen people unironically try to argue to that blowing up hospitals was justified because they might harbor Hamas and killing children was justified as they might grow up to be Hamas.

Like holy fucking shit what disgusting takes I have seen Pro Israel people throw around.

10

u/Pistonenvy2 28d ago

the only thing that shocks me at this point is that people dont see they are being manipulated.

universities full of our own children are against whats happening there, yet the government is supporting it? not even the president either, biden is sort of trying to be middle of the road, most of congress and the senate is just nakedly calling for more genocide, its not even a fucking debate, these people are bought and paid for by AIPAC.

idiots with justify literally anything happening to anyone if they believe in the cause, but somehow dont think twice when they hear that there are THIRTY TIMES as many evangelical zionists as there are jewish ones, that doesnt make you wonder what the fuck is actually going on? lol why the fuck do evangelicals even fucking care about what happens in israel?

it should take 5 minutes tops to figure that out. its all imperialism, its fascism, its money. religion and racism are and have always been tools of fascism throughout all of human history. this conflict is not new or unique.

19

u/MVAudity 28d ago

It's not self-defense. To them, it's God's Law. Conquer the holy land as God's chosen people and then completely erase any trace of the population that was there. It's a way to suppress entire cultures and ideologies and indoctrinate future generations. Read the book of Joshua. It's in part the story of Israelites taking over the Canaanites.

It always makes me so angry seeing pre-1900s german thinkers, just thinking about how much of their work was undone in just a couple decades.

52

u/AhAhStayinAnonymous 28d ago

Or how all of the WW2 vets and Holocaust survivors (that were old enough to remember) are now dead, and it took almost no time at all for people to start walking around with 6MWE t shirts but yet wait, the Holocaust didn't happen and Hitler was a good guy?! I STG, the cognitive dissonance.

33

u/lillywho 28d ago

Funny enough, they went after things like gender identity, sexuality and gender transition as one of the first things. Magnus Hirschfeld (happened to be Jewish if I remember correctly) was pioneering research in the field.

Now imagine how much more liberal and vibrant society would be if the Nazis hadn't come and burnt his books and his institute. We would have had an extra 50 years for people to come to terms with different sexualities and gender expressions.

27

u/Parking-Historian360 28d ago

I'm no expert but I don't think it's occupation if you kill everyone there. Bulldoze all the buildings and resettle with your own people. That's just land grabbing. At this rate gaza will be Israel by the sea. Israel just sees it as free land with some bums needing to be removed.

49

u/catsinasmrvideos 28d ago

Yepppp, the first Institute of Sexual Science, run by Dr Magnus Hirschfeld. An incredible man who conducted research and provided medical support to queer and trans folks. It was burned down by the Nazis in 1933, and it was just the start. It’s kind of wild to me how the rollout of the first attacks of Nazi Germany against marginalized minorities can be seen playing out in the US at local levels via book bannings and anti-trans laws. Thats how it starts; it does NOT start by criticizing Israel.

9

u/TheBuddhaPalm 28d ago

Ehhhh, I'd say they also get pretty upset when the window of who is the 'right type' increasingly narrows, and they never realize they were part of the in-group.

Look at Israel's forced sterilization of African Jews, their treatment of the 'lesser' social classes, and the lionization of the religious scholar class (who cannot be conscripted, because they are too holy).

Same shit that happens whenever fascism occurs: the people back it, then the people begin to find out they were never going to be sitting at the top of the ladder, and they were always going to be the new chattel.

With the burning of books, and brutal slaughtering of innocent civilians, Netanyahu has transformed Israel into what they have always decried. Israel now mocks their own slogan, "Never again" by doing it themselves.

Exactly what the Germans did !!

5

u/WhiteWineWithTheFish 28d ago

Why? Why would you set books on fire? Even if you don‘t like the content they should be kept for later studies of historians.

Given the history of book burning’s, that shouldn‘t be pictures someone is proudly presenting on the internet.

3

u/moon_soil 28d ago

wait aren't book burning usually done by the ba- [shot dead by a sniper]

4

u/sloggins 28d ago

Imagine how much history and knowledge has been lost because of senseless wars.

Scholasticide:

“With more than 80% of schools in Gaza damaged or destroyed, it may be reasonable to ask if there is an intentional effort to comprehensively destroy the Palestinian education system, an action known as ‘scholasticide’,”
...
After six months of military assault, more than 5,479 students, 261 teachers and 95 university professors have been killed in Gaza, and over 7,819 students and 756 teachers have been injured – with numbers growing each day. At least 60 per cent of educational facilities, including 13 public libraries, have been damaged or destroyed and at least 625,000 students have no access to education. Another 195 heritage sites, 227 mosques and three churches have also been damaged or destroyed, including the Central Archives of Gaza, containing 150 years of history. Israa University, the last remaining university in Gaza was demolished by the Israeli military on 17 January 2024.

3

u/Gmaup 28d ago

Errr umm wasn't there a Eastern European country around the late 30's to mid 40's that had a fondness for burning books?

It's getting real fucking tiresome being called "antisemitic" by people for speaking out against the IDF's atrocities in Palestine when the fucking IDF is very fucking literally doing the same kind of thing to Palestine what the Nazis did to them in the 1930s.

No group that has burned books belonging to a persecuted class has ever come out the other side looking like the good guys.

8

u/couchesarenicetoo 28d ago

Yet another war crime!

10

u/SackclothSandy 28d ago

Al Qaeda did this when they took Timbuktu back in 2012. Well, different year, different terrorists.

3

u/CityYard 28d ago

3

u/Intellivindi 28d ago

3

u/Far-Transition6453 28d ago

3

u/-DMSR 28d ago

Afraid of information, huh? That’s not suspect at all.

3

u/G-Unit11111 28d ago

When people start burning and banning books, literally nothing good follows.

3

u/Beneficial-Walrus680 28d ago

Didn't another group of lads burn books 🤔

3

u/sdfiddler1984 28d ago

Isn't it ironic.... I seem to remember another group burning books in the 1940s.

3

u/stripblue 28d ago

Nothing has come to good after all these years of funding them. Let’s try the reverse.

3

u/abig7nakedx 28d ago

That's crazy. We should probably stop giving this country money and guns, maybe even (past?) time to sanction this country

3

u/cantrellasis 28d ago

It is hard for me to understand how people with such a history of horrific persecution can turn around and do the same thing to other people. I am not anti-semitic. What Israel has been doing in Gaza is wrong. Hamas is evil, to be sure, but Netanyahu has refused to recognize or negotiate with any other Palestinian government. God forbid Bibi has to come to an agreement with Palestinians. That would thwart his plan of wiping Palestinians off the face of the earth and taking over the entire region once and for all. It is possible to disagree vehemently with Netanyahu's actions and still support Israel. There are many Israelis who would like to see Bibi gone. They don't agree with what he is doing, either. He will do whatever he can to stay in power. Wartime footing allows him to do that.

3

u/KaiserSobe 28d ago

Israel is living long enough to see themselves become the villain

3

u/Starfire70 28d ago

Burning books. The irony can't really go any higher.

3

3

u/HotPhilly 28d ago

Honey, wake up! A new depiction of evil just self reported. Yeah, it’s Israel again. I’ll put it on the pile for you.

3

u/Grin_AFK 28d ago

3

u/Temporary-Party5806 28d ago

Whosoever does the bookburning or banning, is never the good guy.
