I thought it was Massholes instead of Massachusettsan and Hawaii Resident instead of Hawaiian?

It is, Masshole checking in.

In fact, ive met several people personally from CT and none have not been Connecticunts....though i think Ira Plato is from CT so maybe some folks get a pass

I’ve heard Bostonian and Masshole a million times but never a Massachusettsan

35

u/nerowasframed 9d ago

That's because these are not actually official demonyms. These are recommendations from the US Government Publishing Office. They likely chose that to be consistent and easy for people to remember.

The actual official demonym is "Bay Stater."

Here in Hawaii its definitely unique since Hawaiian is an actual ethnicity. In casual conversations we just say locals or if it’s more formal, then kama’aina.

72

u/praysolace 10d ago

I don’t live on the islands anymore so it’s been a long time since I’ve seen or heard the word kama’aina.

Apparently it just puts the “it’s hot from the hut, your kama’aina Pizza Hut” jingle in my head. Oh no, I think it’s stuck now.

I was born and raised in Iowa, though currently living out of state, and have to disagree. It depends entirely on where you’re at.

Western Iowa? Total wasteland, that. Might as well give it to Nebraska since their tornadoes keep crossing the border anyway.

Eastern Iowa? Got some cool shit!

Effigy Mounds and Maquoketa Caves have beautiful parks and scenery and a rich native history and the largest collection of prehistoric animal shaped mounds in the world. Located in the Driftless Area, a geological zone covering portions of all the nearby states that was untouched by glaciation in the last glacial period, they’re as close as you can get to truly ancient landscapes in the state.

The Amana Colonies are a quaint throwback to the German Pietists who founded them (think Amish but with electricity) and produce some amazing local crafts and foods and have lots of great restaurants and B&Bs to spend a nice relaxing weekend.

Dyersville is kind of lame in a kitschy sort of way, home to the Field of Dreams house and field from the Costner movie of the same name. It’s 100% tourist trap, but they used to run weekly games on the field itself when I visited in the 90s- not sure if they still do.

All up and down the Mississippi are a number of old forts and settlements from the westward expansion period, and most of the really lively cities cropped up in those areas. Plenty of river themed festivals, music festivals (especially jazz and blues thanks to river trade in the early days of the state), and museums of both art and natural history.

But yeah, western Iowa can kick rocks. What do they have? The biggest wind farm? Oooo boy!

14

u/rhapsodyindrew 10d ago

“Demonyms” in the image is correct; the post title misspells the word.

5

u/jahoho 10d ago

Why does the legend say (e)r for the yellow states? They all end in er, with none of them skipping or change the e part.

12

u/shanec628 9d ago

It’s because Maine already ends in -e so the demonym is created by only adding -r. Whereas all the others add -er.

→ More replies (2)

10

u/rhapsodyindrew 9d ago

And labeling Indiana as “(e)r” when the demonym is “Hoosier” glosses over a whole fascinating story. “Indiana” + “er” != “Hoosier”.

It's disputed. I believe the most common story is basically it was a derogatory slang term that was later embraced. It was then adopted as a sort of badge of honor?

That's coming from a Hoosier, even we don't know

86

u/aarkarr 10d ago edited 9d ago

Hoosier here-- the origin of this term is so hotly debated and full of seemingly made-up stories (including who's there, who's ear, and other weird stuff) that the widely accepted answer is "who cares?". We're here to put a 12'' diameter flattened, deep-fried piece of pork on a regular sandwich bun in defiance of both god and man, not to question our dubious origins. But thanks for remembering we exist world-after-Parks-and-Rec-went-off-the-air.

u/H1bbe 10d ago

I know indiana. That's where John Green lives.

12

u/Racxius 9d ago edited 9d ago

I was stalking him for a bit before I realized what I was doing. He’d post a video on vlogbrothers and I’d go, “oh hey, I know that place. It’s really pleasant. I’ll go there this weekend.” Eventually, I realized that I was inadvertently just following John green around and felt kind of creepy so if he shows a place in Indy now I make a mental note not to go there for a minute. I’ve never seen him in person, so I guess I’m succeeding in not stalking him.

Edit: I got Reddit cared for this. So, just to be perfectly clear, I am not stalking John Green. I’m stalking Hank Green.

I've never heard of anyone in New Jersey referring to ourselves as New Jerseyans. I've more often heard Garden Stater and that's only a handful of times. Jerseyite, maybe.

As for Massachusetts, Masshole, of course, but I always said Massachusean, but I'm not native and only lived there for 8 years or so.

I’m from outside Philly and can’t think of any time I’ve ever heard someone use a demonym for people from Jersey. It’s always just “he’s/I am from Jersey”

I don’t think I’ve ever heard “Massachusetten,” but Masshole is pretty commonly heard in neighboring states.

49 states: "uh I guess just use our state name with an appropriate suffix..."

Indiana: "Call us Hoosiers"

Literally everyone: "what? Wtf is a Hoosier?"

11

u/Mortisfio 10d ago

Indiana: "Us, we are Hoosiers. Duh."

"Hawaiian" is not correct, as it applies to the ethnic / cultural group -- the indigenous people of Hawaii.

Folks NOT of Hawaiian descent, that live in the state are called Hawaii Residents.

u/alexmikli 10d ago edited 10d ago

Is this like a political thing or an official thing? Like an AP style guide thing rather than something the local government or people who actually live there say. I'm not from Hawaii, but on the mainland I've always heard "Hawaiian" if we were talking about anyone from the state, and if we meant the native Hawaiians we'd specify that, unless we meant the language, which was just Hawaiian.

u/DonKosak 10d ago

I've lived here for 15 years and inside of the state it is just a common, respectful thing for as long as I've been here.

The US Federal Government ruled to use the terms "Hawaii Resident" in federal paperwork a while back making it a US-wide thing.
