Isn't this old news? Elon announced this like a year ago and they've been restricting tweets with the word cis in it ever since.

369

u/Unhappy_Hedgehog_808 9d ago

If you would read the article it literally addresses this in the opening paragraph and how it’s shifted from Elon simply saying something.

213

u/madd74 9d ago

I didn't read the article, because I'm a Redditor and that's not what we do, however, I've already seen posts where someone tweets "I hate... people" and uses Black, Asian, and other terms and when using cis the system warns the person.

It's been circulating on Reddit for some time now, so an article noting "X now treats..." is still "old news" in that sense.

u/Cerulean_IsFancyBlue 9d ago

I didn’t read all of your comment, but I assure you that it’s irrelevant to discussion and wrong and also I’d love to see some citations.

I REALLY disagree with you so I'm going to downvote you. But I took your statement as a personal attack and downvoting isn't enough, so I'm also going to report you so you get a Reddit Cares PM.

As the article states, on Tuesday posting with the word cisgender or other LGBTQ+ inclusive terms, results in the app informing you you might be posting offensive terms.

135

u/Bugbread 9d ago

I think the confusion is that it was already doing that, but now it's doing it in a different way.

For example, this is from November of last year. As you can see, pre-Tuesday, Twitter marked the post as "Visibility Limited" and said that it may violate Twitter's rules against Hateful Conduct.

According to the article, if you were to post that now (as of Tuesday), a full-screen warning reading would be displayed saying "This post contains language that may be considered a slur by X and could be used in a harmful manner in violation of our rules" and you are given the choice to edit the post or post it as-is anyway.

I don't know if after posting you get the "Visibility Limited" thing as well (I don't use Twitter so I can't check myself).

16

u/felicity_jericho_ttv 9d ago

Something tells posts with a “slur” warning would probably see more engagement on twitter these days

32

u/Outlulz 9d ago

There's no slur warning on actual slurs.

10

u/felicity_jericho_ttv 9d ago

I know. There was a person who tested it and it only flagged cis. Im just shitting on musk and his followers because i feel like they are the type to actively seek out content with actual slurs.

So they'll ignore it and let the use of the word drastically increase on their platform?

Or is that only for real slurs?

470

u/DefactoAtheist 9d ago

I reported a tweet the other day that was some vile dross blathering on about how desperately we need to invent and detonate a genetic bomb that exclusively target Arab genes, like y'know, genuinely, head-scratchingly vicious and repulsive type stuff; get a pretty much immediate automated response, "no violation found."

"Cisgender" = offensive, advocating for the extermination of an entire race = no worries; very cool and normal stuff going on over there on the bird-website.

264

u/Matasa89 9d ago

Bird site died. It’s now a hate platform.

58

u/passwordsarehard_3 9d ago

People need to stop treating it like “a little bird tweeting you a secret” and treat it like “the crazy shit your X was going on about” because that’s what it is.

18

u/LandOfBonesAndIce 9d ago

It used-to be a little bird tweeting you a small secret. Now it’s those angry ass birds in Australia that just swoop on you constantly for just going outside. Oh and sometimes gore, but they’ve seemed to curb that a bit.

Always has been a piece of shit site. What happened - making a lot of money by selling the site to one of the trolls they cultivated - literally and figuratively couldn't have happened to a nicer site.

They wouldn't ever have made money selling it to Musk if they properly dealt with his cave submarine incident.

7

u/StevelandCleamer 9d ago

The problem is that both Twitter and Facebook are used heavily by businesses and organizations as a tool for communication between them and their customers.

Everybody knows Facebook and Twitter exist, so even a viable alternative would take years to bring users over, and they would all be inferior products during the transition due to smaller user bases.

→ More replies (3)

42

u/HeadFund 9d ago

Twitter walked a fine line between being an open communication platform and trying to be a profitable private venture. It had problems, but it also enabled genuine grassroots organization, and even in parts of the world where other forms of communication are limited. That's what made it a target.

Now, Elon is being funded by enemies of the west and no longer even wants the platform to be profitable. This move was meant to cut off democratic movements from a communication channel, and form a new hate platform as a bonus. It's night and day. Comparing X to twitter is such a false equivalence.

Yeah i went back on it to follow the rap beef recently for entertainment and the site is nothing but veiled racism, out of touch hot takes, bots, hate and just a ton of people talking with incredible confidence, about things they clearly know nothing about.

Oh and the narrative shifting blatant paid actors just invading any type of community. That site is exhausting to scroll through, terrible for your mental health if used for more than ten minutes 😮‍💨

I thought reddit got a lot worse but the difference is a universe away when comparing the two.

4

u/onehundredlemons 9d ago

I also went back recently and have noticed that even though I have 1K followers I only get anything from 12-25 views per tweet. Thought maybe everyone had me on mute but then I realized my timeline was really sparse even though I follow several hundred people. At one point there were no tweets from anyone I follow for 23 straight minutes and it wasn't even that late at night, just before 11PM Eastern. No one is even bothering to log in anymore, it seems.

Same reason why people stay on reddit where some subreddits have butthurt mods

51

u/Shaper_pmp 10d ago

That seems like a false equivalence.

Subreddit mods can only affect their little subreddit, and have no power outside of them. One or a hundred bad mods still leaves huge areas of Reddit unaffected.

Twitter is like the Reddit admins getting butthurt, going rogue and banning them from the whole site for stupid, inconsequential shit.

I for one have left the platform. I have installed threads, bluesky and mastodon clients on my phone.

The mastodon is mostly for "vertical" tech oriented communities such as a particular programming language or framework.

BlueSky is kind of sleepy , not much traffic at all.

Threads is where all the religious people and genocidal maniacs seems to be hanging out.

Reddit of course has the most traffic but is full or nonsense and vapid useless content that's wrong about 90% of the time.

201

u/mouseball89 10d ago

I subscribe to this theory ever since the public perception of him being the next "tony stark" was shattered

29

u/arealuser100notfake 10d ago

When dou you think that image changed?

309

u/Elfshadowx 10d ago

When he called the guy saving kids trapped in a cave a pedo.

104

u/PassTheYum 10d ago

He also accused him of child rape when one person sent an anonymous email claiming he had evidence of it, and Musk went ahead and called him a child rapist as well even though his source was an email that essentially just said "trust me bro"

74

u/Revi92 10d ago

This is so fucking disrespectful. I recently watched a video where someone explained in great detail why the cave rescue was so extremely difficult to begin with and how they rescued the children. I don’t believe in god but these cave divers also being doctors and one of them even an anesthetist is a fucking miracle. To insult them while they put their own lives at risk just to save the children is unbelievable and hopefully shattered his imagine a lot online.

73

u/FalcorAirlines 10d ago

One of the divers died during the rescue. Elon is a pathetic piece of shit.

30

u/tommarvolo124 9d ago

TWO divers died

1 during the incident

The second one a year later from a blood infection sustained during the rescue operation.

9

u/Hidesuru 9d ago

I didn't know about that. Terrible. He died a hero at least, but I'd rather he be alive. :-(

17

u/nzodd 9d ago

He also seems to be uncomfortably familiar with the child sex tourism industry in Thailand, since that's the only thing he can imagine a grown man possibly doing in that country. Maybe somebody should comb through Elon's flight logs for evidence.

23

u/cudipi 9d ago

Yup. This was the point that caused people to go “okay what the fuck?” - seemingly everyone thought this guy was amazing and he took a sledgehammer to that imagery so quick it was astounding. He’s never recovered from it and it kills him.

18

u/Arthur-Wintersight 9d ago

On the other hand, his self-comparisons to Henry Ford are starting to look more apt, and I'm not talking about his industrial achievements.

16

u/Arkeband 9d ago

people also forget that he did that because he was humiliated after he suggested he build a big ass submarine tech bro pod to rescue the kids, a thing that would surely fit inside a tiny cave opening that the divers had to contort to get through.

Ketamine got Elon thinking he could get his engineers to invent the Magic School Bus.

that was when people realized oh, this guy’s an actual moron, and then he revealed himself to be a vindictive moron.

75

u/Xirema 10d ago

There's a lot of events you could point to as being the inciting incident, but I still think the true moment where people went from seeing him as a tech visionary to "wait what the fuck....?" was the moment when he accused a Rescue Diver of being a "Pedophile" when he rebuffed Musk's offer to provide assistance in the rescue. Even if you agreed that Musk was doing a good thing in his offer—which I think was a tenuous claim, but his image was positive enough that I think people probably would have just shrugged at it—responding so aggressively and hyperbolically in the way he did made a lot of people open their eyes and realize what kind of person Elon Musk really is.

His reputation has obviously gotten a lot worse in the years since as he continues to be, if I'm being as kind as I possibly can, "a huge prick", but I still think that moment was the big turning point for him.

38

u/FalcorAirlines 10d ago

Musk’s solution was stupid and would not have worked.

33

u/VictorianDelorean 10d ago

The diver wasn’t even rude at first, he said thanks but no thanks your idea wouldn’t work because the cave is too narrow at various points for an inflexible metal tube to fit though, we could use money if you do want to help though.

When he fired his entire PR team. Making Elon Musk look like Tony Stark is one of those once in a generation feats like splitting the atom or formulating the theory of gravity. I can only assume that the members of that team will go on to do great things like cure cancer, solve global warming, or I guess, if they're terrible people, they might instead choose to evaporate all of the Earth's oceans. No, I think he very sincerely is a transphobe and is trying to intervene in popular conversation to push against trans-positive cultural shifts. This all started with the Babylon Bee getting banned for being too openly transphobic. From what people can tell it's all a very bad reaction to one of his kids transitioning (and obviously no longer having a relationship with him)

Exogender- without gender. Endogender- within gender.

I don't agree

26

u/snoee 9d ago edited 9d ago

The Liddell-Scott-Jones (pretty much the Ancient Greek to English dictionary) has this in it's definitions of ἐντός (from which comes the English prefix "endo-"):

  1. within, i.e. on this side, ἐ. Ἅλυος ποταμοῦ Hdt. 1.6, cf. 8.47, Th. 1.16; ἡ ἐ. Ἱσπανία, = Lat. Hispania Citerior, Plu. Cat.Ma. 10; ἐ. τοῦ Πόντου Hdt. 4.46; ἐ. ὅρων Ἡρακλείων Pl. Ti. 25c; ἐ. τῶν μέτρων τετμημένον μέταλλον within the bounds of the adjacent property, an encroachment, Hyp. Eux. 35; τῶν μέτρων ἐ. D. 37.36; also ἐ. τῶν πρῳρέων.. καὶ τοῦ αἰγιαλοῦ between.., Hdt. 7.100.

Granted that's quite arcane, but it's basically citing several examples from authors like Herodotus, Plutarch, Plato, etc where ἐντός is used to refer to things near or on the same side as.

Additionally, in modern Greek, Cisalpine Gaul is called "Εντεύθεν των Άλπεων Γαλατία". Εντεύθεν shares a root with the classical ἐντός.

I chose "exo-" as it's normally the antonym of "endo-" (coming from the ancient Greek ἐκτός: "outside, out of, far from"), but the prefix "meta-", ignoring its modern connotations, would probably work just as well (see modern Greek for "transneptunian": μεταποσειδώνιο). There is no English root to my knowledge directly antonymic to "meta-".

Translating words by narrowly applying meaning doesn't get you very far. Is "endothermic" a poor choice to describe a reaction that absorbs heat from its surroundings because it crudely translates to "of heat within"?

Anyways, that was a fun bit of research, thank you. If you still disagree on endo-/exo-, do you have another suggestion?

43

u/LMGDiVa 9d ago edited 9d ago

I really don't get why people react to trans people this way. People should feel sorry for them like how people feel bad that others have to deal with cancer or parkinsons, not whatever the hell Elon is having a years long tantrum over. Could you imagine the horror and agony you have to deal with being stuck in the wrong body for your entire fucking life?

Being trans is an utter nightmare senario, but at least there's highly successful treatments, it's a shame that acceptance seems centuries behind.

EDIT: The person who wrote this comment is trans. I transitioned almost 13 years ago, I'm dating a non-binary person, and my little brother is also trans and I've been trying to be the only fucking member of my family encouraging him to be the man he wants to be. 4

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 9d ago

You're not allowed to tell me how the fuck I should feel about my trans experience. Piss Off.

I strongly agree with this sentiment—your experience is your own. And frankly, yes, many of the trans people I've known have had difficult lives, even in culturally progressive areas of the country.

People should feel sorry for them like how people feel bad that others have to deal with cancer or parkinsons

I think this is what people may be taking issue with, or at least I do. You're making a generalization that they are pitiable. I think it's probably best to not make blanket statements of any group and treat them as people, and give compassion and dignity to them on an individual basis.

I genuinely don’t understand how people can be so offended by so many things that don’t concern them at all, and yet still call other people “snowflakes” with their whole chest.

3

u/Panic_Azimuth 9d ago

Easy - they're trying to project their faults onto others in an attempt to minimize or ignore them.

They loathe these aspects of themselves, and if they get mad enough at others for displaying these qualities they can pretend that their weakness is small compared to the strawman they've created.

For a binary thinker, this is complete absolution. They're awful, therefore I'm great.

I got a warning for reporting someone for abusing the reddit cares yesterday. I must have seen 6 people complaining about that being abused yesterday. The warning says that it was reviewed without the assistance of automation. Reddit doesn't care.

17

u/TwilightVulpine 9d ago

Lovely. Why even have Care Resources if they don't care that their anti-suicide tool is being used as an anonymous harassment tool?

4

u/cass1o 9d ago

Because it only exists as a bullet point the CEO can read out on a news interview or an earnings call to pretend they care about suicide.

The link takes me to another page where I have to link the comment/PM - and I have no idea who sent the "Reddit Cares" message

You can report RedditCares misuse now! I suspiciously received one after mentioning my gender on a non-LGBT sub a few days ago, and Reddit got back to me same day saying whoever sent it was banned.

now? ever since Elon took over your post will be flagged for hate speech if it has "cis" in it. any other variable racist term slides right under the radar, but "cis" gets you flagged for hate speech immediately. has for a while now.

Well, yeah.  He uses Trans as a slur, so of course he thinks the opposite word is also a slur. Even though both words are just descriptors, not slurs.

Bigots gonna bigot.

3

u/TheMTtakeover 9d ago

I thought he kept saying the whole point of him buying Twitter is because he didn't want any moderation or censorship?

4

u/SeaweedLazy4806 9d ago

They should be fixing the amount of spam that takes place in the comments instead of playing social politics.

3

u/djackson404 9d ago

Could someone please just hack into that place and implant a worm that'll destroy it all completely? Because it's pretty much a zombie-corpse now and needs to be put out of it's misery.

They are okay with slurs on twitter, though, aren’t they?

So, you can be a Nazi all you want, but accuse someone of not being trans and THAT'S over the line?

46

u/seamustheseagull 10d ago

Conservatives think "cis" is a slur because they want to use "trans" as a slur.

Really all there is to it. Conservatives love their slurs and hateful language. But only when they're using them of course.

Remember how proud they were to call themselves TERFs? And how angry they get now when you call them the word they themselves invented and accuse you of using a slur?

Conservatives have always been able to dish it but not take it.

15

u/ericmm76 9d ago

They also don't like that there could be a term for themselves. They think of themselves as "normal" and rankle at anyone describing them in a term they didn't think up. The term cis implies that there are other, normal ways to be.

Just gonna play devils advocate here but I’ve never seen anyone who identifies as cisgendered, use the word cisgendered to refer to themselves.

The only time the word is ever used is either by someone using the word in a negative connotation, in an attempt to piss off someone else. Or it’s used by someone whose hobby is to be recreationally angry and offended by “woke” language.

It is almost never used in a neutral context excepting the extremely small situations where it’s used academically, and usually in this context of whether or not the word should be considered offensive.

I’m not saying anything about whether X is right or wrong to add this term to their list of Nono words. But I would have to imagine that statistically speaking, any time the word pops up on X in particular, it’s as a part of a flame war between two or more overly angry people.

Well if it's said by people that hate you and it's always said negatively what do you call it, a compliment?

One of the few times where a bunch of bot accounts spamming the word would be funny. Even better if the bots can also report each other and just flood the system with reports of it being used.

3

u/HughesdePayensfw 9d ago

3

u/Sprinklypoo 9d ago

I have stopped caring about what this guy says ever since I started treating the words "Tesla", "Musk", and "X" as a slur.

I noticed when I vented yesterday about cis people at work asking me what my "birth name" is. Meanwhile I've seen people have the hard r n-word in their Twitter profiles.

3

u/access153 9d ago

The party of free speech, everyone. Ban them books and words and nips.

3

u/thissucksnuts 9d ago

if its used with the intention of putting others down then it is a slur, just because its a slur youre comfortable using donesnt mean its not a slur. Just because it was common practice to use the N word in the past doesnt make the word not a slur. Dont pretend youre better than others when youre literally copying their actions. If youre better prove it be better not the same.

3

u/chitownadmin 9d ago

Musk is such a scumbag

3

u/im_a_stapler 9d ago

why does anyone even use Twitter? comments on FB is what make it suck and Twitter is nothing but comments run by an insecure man baby.

Almost like having an unstable egomaniac in charge is a bad thing.

3

u/MAGA-Godzilla 9d ago

The term cisgender was coined in 1994 as an antonym to transgender.

The way I see it, boomers accepted the word Yeet, when it was pointed out that is the antonym of Yoink. I think we can get buy-in for cis if we emphasis its dichotomy with trans.

3

u/Amuzed_Observator 9d ago

Well if you support banning certain no no words like petulant children you can't whine when they make a word you don't think is a no no word into one.

The Idea that people need censorship to keep them safe from seeing mean words IN PRINT is ridiculous.

If you can't handle mean words stay off the internet or grow a spine!

3

u/KingAslan1 9d ago

Only 0.00001% cares

3

u/FarmingDowns 9d ago

If people don't want to be referred to by a term, shouldn't that be respected? Can't we all just get along

3

u/timtom85 9d ago

I guess it's easier to automatically moderate text than e.g. videos. I mean, how many times one has to report stolen sex videos of underage girls before the (barely or non-existent) moderation team takes action?
